From cake to brioche to filled to sprinkle-covered, there’s a donut out there for you. In honor of National Donut Day 2021, we’ve picked out a few of our favorite Michigan donut spots. We love highlighting Michigan small businesses, and with so many options to choose from, you can’t go wrong!
For Late Night Cravings: Donutville, U.S.A. (Dearborn)
Open 24 hours, this Dearborn staple is right off of Ford Rd and is a hub of activity at any time of day. A classic American spot to get your donut and coffee fix, they carry all your favorite flavors and then some. Although it’s not available every day, their red velvet donut is simply scrumptious. And, if you ask nicely, they’ll even make you a giant donut for a birthday celebration!
For Something Different Every Week: Donut Bar + Coffee (Southfield and Livonia)
Every day, Donut Bar + Coffee carries 6 signature donuts, including Fruity Pebbles, chocolate dipped, and salted caramel – just to die for! Their menu changes weekly to include offerings such as cinnamon toast crunch, creme brulee, and tres leches. We’ve even spotted an EVERYTHING BAGEL DONUT there – it was heaven. They always have exciting vegan options as well, including chocolate peanut butter Oreo! Try a donut shake (yes, a donut blended into a milkshake), for a totally radical experience. We love a gourmet “cereal donut” and this place never disappoints!
For Donuts and Then Some: Meckley’s Flavor Fruit Farm (Cement City)
Meckley’s has awesome donuts, including classics such as long johns and a maple walnut situation that we dream about at night. They also do a donut of the day, usually featuring some over-the-top (in the best way) combination of flavors and colors. But they are so much more than a donut shop. They make cider, wine, and beer; have a beautiful outdoor seating area; and support local businesses by selling their products and featuring them heavily in their own marketing. Plus, they’re a cider mill, so in the fall you can also get apple cider donuts, apples, and fresh cider. Meckley’s provided the donuts for Christi’s wedding (no wedding cake for me thank you), so you know they’re good – we don’t mess around when it comes to donuts for our most important days!
For Donuts on the Edge: Sugarr Donuts (Woodhaven)
If you’re looking for an edgier vibe, Sugarr craft donut and coffee is worth checking out. The gourmet doughnuts are illuminated against the black walls and pink neon sign. There is a doughnut for everyone, from your plain glaze to fun cereal-inspired doughnuts, including fruity pebbles and cookies and cream. They also have tasty treats for your fur babies. Make sure you get there early because they quickly sell out.
