This Sour Cocktail Is Perfect for Paczki Day

What better way to observe one of Michigan’s most sacred holidays than a vodka made in its honor? Detroit City Distillery’s Paczki Day Vodka is a cult classic, made in celebration of Mardi Gras, also known as Fat Tuesday around the country or Paczki Day here in Michigan. Every year, they increase production and every year, they sell out. This year, it only took 22 minutes. But I’m tenacious when it comes to my booze, and the numerous alarms and calendar reminders paid off.

This vodka is lots of fun. It’s made with literal raspberry paczki (sourced from New Palace Bakery) that are distilled in Polish potato vodka. I’m not much of a vodka girl, but I had to try this and I’m glad I did. You can taste the yeastiness from the paczki and it gives the vodka some extra complexity. Plus, the idea behind the vodka was to celebrate the distiller’s Polish heritage – something we can get behind at MKW.

I used my Paczki Day Vodka to create a spin on a vodka sour that tries to mimic the flavors of paczki. Insead of simple syrup, I used Chambord, a black raspberry liqueur that I thought would channel the raspberry filling. The vodka itself represents the dough, and the lemon and egg white give it some tartness and body.

Mardi Gras is all about indulging. So I’d recommend you pick up a few paczki, whip up a Paczki Day Sour, and laissez les bon temps roulez.
